I hate to break this to you. Years ago, most dressed up to go to an evening Broadway show. By this I mean suits or even a tuxedo for opening night, nice dresses. It was a "happening". The matinées were casual. Eventually, people started dressing down. That was to avoid looking "rich" as you emerged from the theater and into the throngs of pan-handlers (beggars). Now, you have a large mix. If this is your first show, and therefore very special, wear something special. It will add to the night. Hopefully, the play will be worthy of you.

I would definately do something semi-dress, depending on your style, it doesnt neccessarily have to be a dress, for a female but it should be classy, same with a guy, I also thinks style of dress depends upon which broadway show you are seeing. family oriented can be a bit more casual, where as a adult themed requires a little more class in the dress.

Very few people dress up for Broadways shows anymore.
Not too casual, something you would wear to a nice dinner with friends.

I'm working at the box office for one of the top Shakespeare theatres in the country and when patrons ask what to wear, we tell them "business casual."
