The War on poverty has worked. Back when it was passed by the LBJ administration, poverty was so bad in this country that children in the poor rural parts of the country as well as the inner cities had distended bellies due to lack of food to eat and malnutrition. The school lunch program was started to help these children out. And, a number of other programs were started. The poverty rate in this country is large enough but it isn't nearly the level or at the desparation it was before. However, I believe that the program can and should improve.
I was watching PBS the other night and it was on the FDR program to get America out of the Depression. The thought occurred to me that what a great idea it would be to get all welfare recipients into a program that was much like the WPA. Either that, or pay for these people's education so they could afford to advance themselves. This would include mentally disabled people as well. It would be a much wiser use of welfare funds than simply giving them a check. Their lives would be richer and more productive. It would also help their self esteem. We could also have day care programs and after school programs for their children that the WPA would hire the workers to take care or educate the children while their parents worked in this program. It would have to pay a living wage of course, but it would ultimately pay for itself because our country would be making a more productive and more educated work force. It would also lower crime by giving people a chance to lead productive lives. FDR had it right all along, it just needed to be extended into the civil rights movement of the 1960's.

Stop the giveaway and by all means, don't go socialist.
Raising the minimum wage to $21.00 an hour as suggested here would mean a gallon of milk would probably cost you 8 bucks. Gas maybe 10 bucks a gallon.
Heck you can make the minimum wage 100.00 an hour if you like. Just means everyone else will make more.Everyone needs to quit worrying about what others make and take care of your own life. Live within your own means. I know that's a tough new concept but there it is.
Way too many people calling for redistribution of wealth. That's just a polite way of saying total socialism or communism. That really means 5% will still have alot of wealth and power and the other 95% will be miserable but by God we will all be equally miserable and poor.
That will make many lower income people happy. Kinda like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Helping the poor starts with you.
Don't feel sorry for the poor- help them.
Stop making poverty someone else’s problem.
Whether the help comes in the form of a leg-up, a bed to sleep in, a job, food, support, and a ride to work...
If we helped people when they are struggling we wouldn't see them sinking deeper into poverty, but the only way that will ever happen is if we (society) start really and truly giving a damn and stop passing the buck.

Basically, government needs to stop catering to Big Business. Studies have shown the average CEO makes more in one day than the average worker makes IN A YEAR. There is so much money at the top, and there is nothing left towards the people who work.
There needs to be money that goes to the workers. If minimum wage kept up with inflation, minimum wage should be approximately $21 an hour. With that, how can someone earn a living making 7, 8, or 9 dollars an hour?
There is so much else that can't even be covered on here...

Irish beggers on Plymouth Rock with a 'humble begger's face'?!?!? Oh, ... this is stable. thank you. i mandatory that. You do understand that the Irish quite often got here in the process the famine and different cases while the Indians have been quite often already killed and betrayed by skill of something individuals, do no longer you? and that i could desire to assert... i do no longer think of I even have ever in my existence seen Irish 'with a humble begger's face'. It purely would not seem an expression they do properly.

Sure we can, but not before we clean up the failing system that we presently have. There's so much unnecessary waste that it's pathetic. Frequently the money and help isn't even channeled to the right places.
We need to do some cleaning up and I'll bet we'd find enough money that's being wasted, without having to raise taxes.

America has tried and tried to do just that.
I'm all for helping the poor, but there must be time lines. You know time lines right? Most libs do. LOL, get it?
I'll always be willing to help the poor, but they must take a drug test first.

Probably. But can the poor also do something constructive to help themselves?

America or the one's who run it.....don't really want to help the poor!!
Weeding out the weak and sick and poor!
Or put them to work in sweat shops and unregulated agriculture labor jobs at below base wage - below base safety - without health insurance and acceptable working conditions (essentially slave labor)!!!!
Who's kidding who!!
The poor are only important when they serve a purpose!!!
