I could swear that ounces were a measure of volume, not mass. After all, a glass fits 8 oz, a cup fits 4-6 oz. Starbucks coffee cups come in a 16 oz cup, irregardless of what drink they put in it... and they dont all weigh the same.

Anyway, I can only find reference to ounces as a measure of mass and weight, depending on context.

But there are several types of ounces
Fluid ounces
Dry ounces
Avoirdupois ounces
Troy ounces
Apothecaries' ounces

But, anyway... I also found reference to the use of ounce as a measure of distance... specifically thickness... of an animal hide (leather)
