i'm pretty young so sorry if its a dumb question, but exactly why is a social security card so important? i need it for just about everything - job, school, license, etc.....but i don't know why it is so important.
QUESTIONS:
1.) i remember having that blue card for as long as I can remember. exactly why do i have that card, considering that I had to take a test for my driver's license. why not a test for the ssn card? where exactly did I get that card from?
2.) do I have special privileges with that card? in other words -- what can I do with that card that others without it can't? what does that card allow me to do? if I didn't have the card -- would I be screwed?
3.) i heard something about seniors collecting "social security" later in their lives. does the seniors "social security" have anything to do with that little blue card? or am I mistaken?

is there anything else I need to know about the blue card? is it good? bad? my ticket to freedom? thanks in advance......

1) Your parents got it from the Gov. when you were born. It's a way that you can be labled. A number. So the IRS knows how much you make, and how much to tax you. And they can also keep track of where you work and any credit you apply for.

2) Things you can do that others with out it can't, Vote, Be in the U.S. as long as you want. Make fun of others that don't have one.

3) No the seniors don't have things to do with the card, but the ssn lets the gov know how old they are to start collecting benifets. You get issued that card when you're born so they know how old you are acording to your #.

And yes it's your ticket to freedom. Your passport to the U.S.A.

Yeah, it is important. That card, or the number on it, identifies you to the government. When you get a job money will be taken from your earnings and put towards social security. When you reach age 63 (soon to be raised to 65 or 67) you can start to claim the money you put into social security. It isn't much, so be sure you have other retirement investments too.
For school and other times you will need to know your ss# as it is used to identify you because no one else will have that number. (They are trying to make it so that schools can't use that number because it is dangerous for so many people to have access to that number. )
Without your ss card you can't get a job, you won't be able to file taxes, get a marriage license, and many other licenses. You also won't be able to collect SS money.
It used to be that you got a ss# when you got your first job. But now you get one as soon as you're born. Uncle Sam wants to know all about you from your birthday!
Hope this has been helpful....and don't lose that card!

John S., your social security card is your ticket to eternal happiness and bliss. I have had mine since I was 16 years old and I am now in my sixties and still have the original card, of course it is in good shape for I have had no reason to show it to anyone, for I refuse to give out my social security number, for that is the only number that the government and private business can track you by. My mom (God bless her) lived a long life never revealed her SSN in fact on credit applications where it asked for it she wrote NOYB (none of your business) and was never denied credit or stopped from buying a car, etc. Yes, we seniors can collect social security when we retire for we have been putting in social security taxes all of our working life, the return does not mean a hill of beans, but it is better than nothing. Get your social security card and protect your number with your life, it is yours and yours alone........
