I can think of two I consider perfect books. One is Don Quixote. It is the kind of book that contains everything - humor, pathos, romance, irony, fantasy, heroism ... and it is all rolled up into one truly amazing story. I recommend reading that book at least 3 times in your life. When you are young and idealistic, when you are a little bit older and more experienced and when you are old and wise. You could read that book 100 times and never fully experience it.
The other book I consider perfect is Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale. Her prose is so totally amazing and her storytelling ability so right on that the book literally reads like you are holding a jewel in your hands. It is awe inspiring for authors and an amazing experience for readers.
I have read many other near perfect books, but those two stand out in my mind as true perfection. Pax - C

The greatest book I ever read (decidedly because of the ways it continues to touch my life)
The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran
It is a short story of a man about to leave for home, from a place he has lived many years. And his town of people have gathered to ask him advice and bid him fairwell.
It gave such a great and beautiful example of a belief system that I would choose to have.
Some others:
Johnathan Livingston Seagull
For Us, The Living, by Robert Heinlein
The Celestine Prophesy, by James Redfield

It's hard for me to pin down a fav, but I'll say The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. I first read it as a pre-teen and absolutely fell in love with the idea of aliens coming to Earth. (It's actually wa the first work of science fiction I've ever read.)
It has a good, fast-paced story told from the perspective of the narrator who is facing the invasion first hand. And, unlike predecessors of this genre, it's not filled with crazed zombies and other wackos trying to eat everyone else!
Overall, I just like the narrator - he's strong in the midst of chaos and keeps a hopeful outlook, even when others are quite negative. Plus, it has a good ending (but I won't say anymore!) Check it out sometime!
Cheers!! :)

One great book I read was "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco. It was a perfect book, very much renowed when it came out in the early 80's. A book to read. Why was it such a good book? The style and writing are superb and the story is fantastic, mystery, interigue, passion, sin, lust, religion. It has it all..

I've read a couple that I think are really awesome. There is one called Eat, Pray, Love - it's spiritual, but not "holy". It's a wonderful story about a woman learning about herself - including how to forgive herself for getting a divorce and how to love herself, etc. Then there's another called Annie Freeman's Traveling Funeral. It's another one about women learning about themselves - and about women being real close personal friends.
