If you have identical computers. Otherwise no. The hardware specs and drivers for those specs will not match up.

If you try to use it then you will receive a blue screen error when you restart your computer.

You will need the same operating software that your laptop has. Example - If your system has XP Home you will need an XP Home Disk. If it is the same CD disk your friend have , then you can use the disk but you will have to provide the product key code number that is usually on the bottom of your Laptop. Enter this key and at the end of the installation. Then you have 30 days to activate your software. call Microsoft 1 - 800 number and activate your software.

Next You will probly have to use your friends laptop and get online. You will have to go to your Laptop Brand websight and type in your laptop information to download your drivers for your laptopon (Flash drive, Cd disk). After you put your drivers on cd or flashdrive install them on your laptop to get you laptop running brand new again. If you had your recovery disk you will not have to do all this work.
Good Luck!!

Yes a hard drive is identical to another except size and obviously the label so you should be able to use a set of such discs from an identical laptop.
