Jimi was great and all, but Clapton really captured the sound that a guitar is supposed to make.

Clapton by far. Hendrix was a very average guitar player. Only thing he had to his advantage was cool effects and a stoned audience. Anyone learning guitar can play Hendrix's stuff within a few months of practice. Clapton made his guitar a living thing with feeling and strength. Hendrix just pressed a Wa-Wa peddle and loosened a string with good timing. Had he had a few more years it would have been interesting but he chose his fate.

Hendrix did a lot more in a shorter time. Clapton is still around so it's not really a fair fight. Even though my B-day is the same as Clapton's, I gotta go with JIMI!

Two TOTALLY different kinds of music, they both did great work though. I wouldn'd say the sound it's "suppose to make" because instruments can make many different sounds, which Jimmy knew and was willing to take that risk. If it really comes down to the best gutar player only between these two I'd say clapton, but best ever would be something more like Rory Gallagher. Look him up if you like early rock guitar.

Because Clapton is alive, he gets the head to head if they plugged in a 2 guitars on stage with a pile of $5 million to the winner today.

But 40 years ago, Clapton would have laughed at the very idea, he knew who is the best. They all knew.
