The nvidia 8880gtx (though pricy) is one of the best cards out right now. For a cheaper budget I would definitely go with an ati x1950xt or an 8800gts.

You shouldn't have asked that! This will start a war.

Neither is "better". Both are great companies and have been competing with each other for speed for years. nVidia had a wide lead in speed the last few months, but ATI just released a very fast card. Either way, you will be getting a great card if you get their top-of-the-line PCIe card.

for direct 9 i think ati is the best they have the best prices on newegg for example you can get an ati x1950pro for around $100 that kills a $150 geforce 7900gs so it depends on price but ati wins most of the time also i like ati more on direct 9 because with ati you could have AA(analisic lighting) and HDR rendering on at the same time but you can't with nvida's cards
as for direct 10 nvida wins hands down just because they have more cards out ati has only released one card that supports direct 10

NVIDIA has been the industry standard for many years.
Not only is it the best but many gamers order and install there latest just to keep up with the best.
