I have a program called Carbonite Backup. When my computer is fully booted up, the icon for it is in my system tray, which I am fine with. However, on startup it automatically installs the shortcut to it on my desktop, which I find very annoying. I delete it, but it is right back on the desktop each time I start the computer.

Look in the program itself for an option to place a desktop icon.

Alternately, check msconfig for this auto item.

Start - Run
msconfig
press enter
Go to the StartUp Tab and look for the offending program.
UNCHECK the one you find and reboot.

Remember to RECHECK the program if your change does not affect your desktop correctly.

I don't know Carbonite myself, but I would go into the settings for the program and look carefully to see if there was a setting to put the shortcut back on the desktop if it has been deleted. It sounds like it would be a useful setting if viruses or trojans were to try to take over a computer and remove that icon... just thinking out loud.

Look for some kind of STARTUP SETTINGS as well.

You could always look in the STARTUP folder in PROGRAMS. If there is something there that puts the icon on your desktop you could move it to another folder, but don't delete it, you never know if it might do something else.
