Would it be fair to say that it is their most fundamental fear - to finally realize that they are insignificant?? What else could it be?

I think you must feel that you are losing some "imaginary power" as you stated. In that, I would say you are correct. Racists like you are finding your ideas "eroding" and being challenged. People that feel the way that you do must really be afraid right now since your rhetoric and fear mongering is being laughed at and ignored. I find it very comforting to know you are exposing your most fundamental fear in that you feel insignificant. Better get with the mainstream since the doors are closing-fast!

i think this question is very interesting.
although i agree with the other woman because she said she can not relate to or understand the rascist because she is not rascist herself...i feel the same way.

it seems that they are fearful that their imaginary power is eroding because many oppressed nations have pushed hard to gain their positions in society.

i cannot understand the rascist mind but i can understand that there is an evil force which just wants to rule, conquer and divide people . as well as an un healthy need for power over other people so yes, one of these would be the rascist...

in my personal opinion, i think not only the rascist are fearful but so are the "sexist"... men are becoming fearful that their power in society is becoming insignificant....;)

Hmm. Interesting question, but allow me to answer it from the other side.

By 'Racist', I'm assuming you mean those who don't kiss your feet and beg for forgiveness for the horrors of the past, as oppposed to KKK members. I'm assuming you'd label me as a racist, because I feel no responsibility for the awful things my race has done in the past. I've hurt no one, and I will not apologize for crimes I did not commit just because of what color I am. Those who dislike things like Affirmitive Action, and label it as the racist law that it is. (By law, a company HAS to hire a certian number of minorites, and a school HAS to accept a certian number, even if the applicants are unqualified. (obviously there is no issue if the applicants are qualified.) They do so by using lower standards of admission for minorites then caucasions. How is that not racist?)

I'm assuming you mean the laws that are in place to help minorites get into schools and jobs. People (of every color) are angry about it because it assumes that
a) All white people have an easier time succeeding then minorites. (False)
b) Minorities cannot succeed on their own without laws to help them. (False)

Now, if you really think about the issue, you should be just as angry as anyone else.

Now: The eroding of power bit. People are angry because laws are preventing some from succeeding, even if they worked for it, while allowing others (who may not have worked as hard) to succeed in their place. The tables have turned, and now the laws are in place to prevent caucasions from succeeding, instead of minorites. Don't we have as much of a right to be angry about it as you did?

think they are more significant than you lead us to believe. if they were so insignificant then people wouldn't answer their questions.

btw...if their power is imaginary how does it become less?

racism today is more powerful in a subtle way than yesterday. we are all believed to think that everyone is getting along just fine. there will be a breaking-point and it won't look good.

how are they losing power? racism isn't just limited to the crude ways of the klan. racism is institutional, it's this more insidious form that is the most detrimental. from the criminal justice system, school system, the work place. racism going away? where do you get that? a disproportionate number of black men in prison and blacks and latinos getting the worst educations in the rural south and large metropolitan areas. and don't forget the slow response to hurricane katrina...it's not going away anytime soon that much you can be sure of.

Racists never had or never will have any power.

Racism is synonymous with ignorance. To hold and espouse racists views a person would have to be either totally ignorant of, or blind to the contributions of ALL people, regardless of their color.
