A happy accident - an hourglass shape is one that allows for the maximum resonating sound box size (for loudness before amplification) while allowing for the most freedom of movement around the strumming and/or bowing area of stringed instruments.

some of that's true...the shape is to the female form..

and some of it is to function...and it's just nice that the two properties result in such a nice curvy shape, huh?

God knows what He's doing...there's no doubt about it.
