Say the governor wants the execution to go ahead, but can the president stay the execution?

Yes he can, the Governor of the state or the President of the US can stay an execution.

No, stays are issued by courts of law -- generally appellate courts. Clemency on the other hand, can be granted by the executive branch. Governors of the state can issue clemency within their own state. The President can issue clemency for inmates on Federal Death Row. Both can also issue commutation of sentence. The President however CANNOT issue orders at the state level.

Jurydoc has it right, the folks who say that the POTUS can state a state execution don't know what they are talking about.
