My husband brought a mature painted turtle home for my boys. He is in a wading pool during the day. Is it okay to bring him in at night in a regular "dry" box as long as it has drinking water?

Turtles can stay out of water for about eight hours but are aquatic and need water to eat and for exercise and too cool down.

I have a Western Painted and you will definetly need a large tank/rubbermaid container (at least 40 gallons) as the rule is ten gallons per inch of shell. You will need a submersible heater, a great filter, a UVA (heat bulb) and a UVB bulb positioned over the dock a foot away in clamp lamps. (78 F in water and 90 F basking).

It is not OK to dry dock the turtle unless they are sick and if outside in the pool the water will overheat and they probably can't get out-best not to leave them outside. Please get the appopriate setup for the turtle..it may be expensive but it has to be done; otherwise, take him back to the petstore.

I would suggest that you make sure that this turtle is not ill or is disease free before your son handles it. Wash hands!!! You need to set up something in the house as well. What are you going to do in the winter months. The turtle won't survive a wading pool outside in winter and it would be cruel to keep him for the summer and then release him to the wild..... If you plan on keeping it I would suggest an aquarium or a rubbermaid. You will also need the proper light, heater, basking area, filter, water condtioner and frequent water changes. Also turtles need a proper diet...

You can put a female in moist dirt over night to lay her eggs in the dirt or a couple hours a day.

So they can stay out for some time without concern. For sick turtles some suggest leaving them out for a bit too.

hi, you ought to have executed the analyze in the previous to procure them. With 2 painted turtles you will choose a tank length everywhere from a hundred and sixty gallons to 220 gallons. the well-known rule of thumb is 10 gallons for each inch of shell, so if the turtle has a shell length of four inches it desires a 40 gallon tank. men get to have a shell length of 8-10 inches, and girls human beings 10-12 inches. to boot to a super tank you choose a uvb lamp, warmth lamp, basking dock, submersible water heater and a super water clear out. those are all prerequisites for a healthful turtle. the only ingredient which you exchange is the basking lamp and warmth lamp, yet it somewhat is supplied which you will get direct photograph voltaic to the turtles for 2-3 hrs an afternoon. this would possibly not be by a glass window as a results of fact the glass will distort the easy so the turtles won't get the income of the finished spectrum of uvb spectrum. in case you would be able to desire to try this make confident they have a place of colour to get out of the solar in the event that they get too warm. in case you ought to purchase all of this, your watching at budget of $275-$350. this is a area you may examine for wellbeing and habitat care. wish this helps.

I dont think this is the right kind of turtle you should have Western Painted turtles live in ponds, lakes, marshes, and in slow-moving rivers that have soft, muddy bottoms to prevent them from freezing. They can survive without oxygen at 37.4 degrees Fahrenheit for up to five months.
I dont know if people have them as pets..but I dont know I could be wrong!

Good Luck!!

"How long can you keep a Western Painted Turtle out of water?"

Technically speaking: forever.

Buy a tank for your turtle to live in, if you cant handle his needs dont buy him or return him to the store.

Eventually if you keep doing this he will develop some sort of problem, and im guessing you dont have UVB light bulb either? he really needs that also.

Painteds need water to sleep in, and to feel safe and secure in. Please do not do this plan.
