Hey there Frosty! My fish always die on me so I can't offer much help, but I do know you can get algae eating fish. Might help you :)

High Phosphois levels can cause algae out breakes, if you have moved or if you water sorce has changed at all (city using new chemicals?) you cab have an out brake, nitrogen levels can contribute also but usualy only in lager algaes like duck weed. If you have changed lights on your tank and upgraded to a better light or one that gives out the waves that the particular algae likes you can have an algae bloom or if you are leaving a window open and the light only falls on that one spot of gravel that could have casued it also. Most of this is from personal fish tank mess ups.

Light is pretty much the biggest variable in algae outbreaks. More light means more algae.
