Heat is what makes clothes shrink.
Wash your clothes in cold water instead of hot. And dry them on a low temperature instead of high heat.
If there's something that fits you so perfectly that you don't want to take a chance of shrinking, wash it on cold and then hang it to dry instead of using the dryer. Once it's dry you can run it through fluff air on your dryer and that will make it all soft and nice even though you hung it dry.

Try cooler water in the washer and either a cooler setting on your dryer (like medium) or a shorter drying time. Only dry them until they're dry. Also, try some fabric softener. Contrary to popular belief, you can put liquid fabric softener in at the beginning of you wash with the detergent and it still works. It helps the fabric absorb heat more evenly and lengthens drying time for those of us who have a habit of drying them too long. They're less likely to shrink that way. :)
Hope this helps!

Wash in cooler water and dry at a lower setting (for example permanent press has a cool down cycle, cotton doesn't), removing the clothes before they are completely/totally/100% dry. They should be "just" dry. Takes practice to determine that stage, practice-practice-practice.

Check out the tags of the clothes. Some clothes require certain kinds of washing. You can also ask your girlfriend how she does the laundry.

Sounds like the heat is high. Washing in hot, having a hot dryer setting.

Have her show you how she does your laundry or have her write it down. You may be washing in too hot water...I always use warm on my regular clothes and permanent press with medium heat. My whites like sheets and towels I use hot water and dry my sheets on permapress and my towels on regular temp. Good Luck to you!!!!!
