Feel free to call it a "fair" pole if you like. The foul lines that run from the batters box up the first and third base lines to the outfield fences and than the poles themselves are considered, by baseball rules, to be in fair territory. Is a glass or water half full or half empty? They call it a foul pole because everything on the other side of the pole, or foul line, is foul.

The foul pole is an extension of the baseline; therefore, anything striking it is a fair ball. They were put in for the umpires to make better calls on long homers, particularly those hit by Babe Ruth.
The line have had their names forever, so trying to change the names is ridiculous. Just say "foul pole" and "foul line" to yourself enough that they sound right to you, and you'll be fine. . . .

The foul pole and foul lines are named that way because they designate at what point the ball will be considered foul, which is outside of the line and pole. They are considered to be in fair territory because they designate the point at which fair territory ends and foul territory begins. Just like in most sports lines are considered in bounds because they are there to indicate the point in which the field of play ends.

if it hits the foul pole it truly is honest. that's in honest territory considering that's consistent with the foul line on the sector. i odn't understand why the named those 2 issues "foul", in spite of the very incontrovertible fact that that's in honest territory

Because life in general doesn't make much sense. For example, why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway?
