I have a 01 YZF600R, riding home from work one daying doing about 65mph, and I noticed the oil light came on shortly for about 10 seconds, it did that twice. I changed the oil less than 2,000 miles ago, and I don't do burnouts or wheelies or hole shots, and it don't appear to be leaking any oil. Has this ever happened to anyone, any idea of what might be going on, think it's still safe to ride?

Well when I got home, it did sit for about 20 mins and I checked the oil window and it was almost full, does anyone know where the sensor is and if it can be checked, or what I can check myself to see if it could be the problem? Thanks I appreciate the responses

I've heard of this problem from other guys on my FZR/YZF board. Sometimes it seems like the oil pump basically can't keep up with the speed of the engine. It isn't to say that oil isn't getting circulated, but sometimes the sensor in the pan that turns on that light gets low for a second and causes that light to trip. Even if you have enough oil in there but it's just a tad bit low it can still happen depending on how fast the engine is revving and if you lean over the bike for a second. Those factors could cause the light to come on.

Personally, if the oil is at the correct level in the window, then you should be fine. What you could try doing is if it happens again pull over right away and check to see where the oil is at in the window. It should appear a little lower than what it'll be after sitting for a few minutes and the oil drains back down into the pan.

It's possible that something else could be going wrong, but considering I've heard this same thing from other Yamaha riders and had this happen to myself, I wouldn't be overly concerned just yet.

Check your oil level - most bikes have a little window where you can see how much oil is in it - you might have to have someone else hold it level while you check it unless you have a center stand.

How long ago you changed the oil doesn't matter if it is burning or leaking oil.

If your oil level is correct, but the light keeps coming on, it probably has a faulty sensor - but it might also be an oil pump failing.

If you can't figure it out, then take it to a motorcycle mechanic to have it checked out - it might cost a few bucks, but it beats having a blown engine.

Did you check the oil level in the proper manor?
Run the bike for a few minutes.
Turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes (to let oil from the top end drain down to the crankcase).
Then check the oil level with the bike straight up and down (as if you were sitting on it).

One possibility is the oil sending switch may be going bad, a low oil will cause it and worn bearing. The most likely cause is the switch but be sue its full of oil. Good Luck and GOD Bless

Don't ride it until you find the problem. Check the oil level-if its good see if the pump failed.
