As a tennis player and "grunter" myself, I know that when you stroke the ball and let out noise it helps you exert energy and force into the stroke.
But like many serious players, it can be frustrating when you make a mistake like hitting the ball out or in the net especially when there's a crowd watching. Sometimes you can get mad at yourself and shout. It's a bad habit, but it helps some people deal with errors and frustrating situations.

Women oftentimes grunt when playing extended points and when getting tired. That grunting is a forceful way of making sure they are breathing on every shot. You hear it from the guys as well, but it is usually not as loud, nor as often since the guys also tend to be in a bit better condition.

You get more power when you grunt. It's common in softball too from pitchers. Or else it just scares your opponent. :) I just think it is funny to watch. I've heard some really interesting utterances while watching softball.

She's a power hitter and when putting all that force behind a shot, it causes her to scream out a little

just when she hits the ball...I think it's a way to get an extra oomph on the ball. Lots of players do that.

i think players do that because they hit with so much force, it causes them to shout or maybe she is doing it for attention.
