Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus got the nickname of Caligula when, as a little kid he went on war campaigns with his father and the Roman army. The soldiers gave him the nickname Caligula because they thought it was cute to see that little kid wearing military gear. It means "Little Boots". I've seen pictures of what these "boots" supposedly looked like, and they're not what we would call boots today. They looked more like what today we would call sandals that had long straps which were wound around the ankle and lower leg.

Do I get extra points if I know that his father's name was Germanicus? Name Germanicus because of his conquest of the Germanic tribes.

As stated above it meant "little boots" . The soldiers considered him to be good luck. Caligula would dress in a child sized breast plate etc.

Caligula is a nickname. His given name was Gaius. A lot of historians these days call him Gaius.

As YOU undoubtedly know - his nickname was "little boots." His "first" name was always Caligula of the Julii (sp?).
Not a nice person - but after what he went through after his father died - he didn't have much of a chance at sanity.

It meant "Little Boots", no Ninja's in Ancient Rome. His real name was Julius Caesar, and no one wanted to call him that.
