We'll only be there one night and are looking for something somewhat affordable, modern and clean. A beach view would be great, but isn't a deal breaker. Thanks!!

Check out the Coast Santa Cruz Hotel ( http://www.resideo.com/37280820.hotel ) or the Santa Cruz Beach Inn ( http://www.resideo.com/55406521.hotel ) -- those are some of the nicest resorts in the area.

We've stayed a couple of times at the Coast Santa Cruz Hotel. It is the only hotel on the beach, not across the street from it, and has direct beach access.
It's a 10 minute walk to the boardwalk, so it's far enough away that you aren't dealing with nonstop crowds and noise, yet close enough to go and have fun there, and the restaurants on the pier.
The rooms themselves are basic, like a Best Western, but each room in the tower has it's own balcony looking out over the beach and ocean, which are right below. There's some rooms around the pool area too, but we prefer the tower.
This is probably the best place if you mainly want to hang around the boardwalk area.

Last year my family and I stayed at the Sea Crest for one week. It is pretty much located RIGHT ON THE BEACH! Its incredibly reasonblel too.
