Walter Payton. He has 16,726 yards compared to Emmit Smith's 18,355.The closest active player to him is suprisingly Corey Dillon with 11,241 yards.

barry sanders is 3rd, but anyone who watched him play and retire knows that the record should be his. He is a class act and left the game way too early. I don't want to take too much away from Emmitt, but if barry hadn't retired...Emmitt wouldn't have come close to touching the record.
