My daughter's first name is not what I wanted in the first place. Her stepfather and I were married when she was born and the name was his input. We live in NC and now that she is 16 we want to change it. Any suggestions or info on how/where to start the process? Thanks

You can just start using a new name. The best way is to have a lawyer file for a name change.

I am not sure, but I think you can just go to the courthouse of the city she was born in and request a change. I changed the spelling of my son's middle name that way, however, he was only 9 months old at the time.

Contact the local courthouse. Also, does your daughter want to change her name? She's been using it for 16 years. At this point it's kind of stuck.

Well, all I wanted to do was to have a middle name. My parents were hippies when I was born and decided to let me pick my own middle name. So I did, and we tried to get me one, and I got the run around a lot and they wanted me to pay them in order to get one. Start by calling the Clerks office at your local courthouse. They should be able to direct you on who to contact. So now that I'm married Ijust made my maiden name my middle name!! They do that for free and it's really easy! Good luck.

You need to go to your local court house and file out a name change paperwork. There will be a fee and you will have to state your case on why you want to change it.

Forget what you want, what does the duaghter want? At 16, she makes that decision, not you.

Either way, it's a court issue.

Yep, it's a legal thing. Call your courthouse on information. They should know where to start.

Why change it? It is her name no matter what. Go have another kid so you can name it what you wanted.
