For the US you can get the answer by quarter (3 months) from the Dept of Energy

from there you can add 4 quarters for a year, or estimate a week.
for 2006 it was 1,161,444,000 'short tons' (2000 pounds, not a metric ton)

And that's just from the powder river basin.
according to that site, 1,011,985,220 tons of coal were removed in 2000.
