I am taking a trip for a week this summer. I am flying into Phoenix/Scottsdale, renting a car, and driving to San Francisco. I want to spend a day or so in the phoenix area, and a good amount of time in the San Diego, Orange County area. I want to see as many cool things as I possibly can with the amount of time I have. I'm into sightseeing, winerys, shopping, eating at cool restaurants, some partying, beaches, etc. Not really into museums and that kind of thing. I plan on driving up the pacific coast highway from orange county to san fran. Any ideas on things I should definitely not miss? I've heard Big Sur is cool, and some castle(can't remember the name) might be worth seeing?

Great trip, be sure you stay on Hwy 1 from Ventura north, and it is the Hearst Castle that you are thinking of. Palo Alto is a great community with great wineries, Big Sur is beautiful, Carmel and Monterrey are fantastic. You should always try some of the restaurants and shops that are off the beaten path and you will find food that will drive you crazy. Have a great time, and don't forget another great spot Santa Cruz.

Mmmm, that's tough.

I'd seriously consider going up to Kingman, Boulder Dam, Las Vegas - across Death Valley - up through the Joshua Tree forest - Lake Tahoe area. If you were ever into old time western movies you will be driving through all these areas that look like something out of those movies. The Joshua Tree forest is really cool - you don't even have to get out of the car/stop.

After Tahoe, head down to Napa Valley then San Francisco via the Golden Gate.

In San Francisco - China Town in the early AM, before the stores open is really cool to see. Watch the weird stuff coming off the trucks. The Presidio is very cool too, also seen in a lot of movies.

Get a portable DVD player and alot of movies that she's always wanted to see. Also try an XM radio...there are alot of channels to listen to that will make time go by pretty fast. If all else fails....slip some nyquil in her breakfast and she'll sleep the whole day away.
