I have seen these only a couple of times...a GIGANTIC BLACK FLY...when I say 'gigantic', I MEAN IT..we are talking TWO INCHES LONG. I saw it flying around like some kind of black shadow, and thought it was some type of moth, until it landed at the edge of a puddle for a few moments and I managed to get close enough to see it was a FLY, with a head that closely resembled that of a horsefly, with those big hemispherical eyes pressed closely together. It looked like an insect version of Darth Vader! I am in Southern Ontario. Anyone know what these are?

Black horse flies can get BIG. Here (3rd one down) is one about 1.5 inches long:

Think that may be it. If you are used to the smaller, striped ones, this one can be really startling.
