I started at 4.5 months after getting back from a trip, it would have been a pain to start on the trip, I was breastfeeding so I only needed me to feed them if I waited until after.

I breastfeed and bottle feed my baby who was 11 pounds at birth. I put rice in her bottle when she was 6 weeks old (after seeing so many people say they choke at that age... NO she didn't... give babies more credit and watch them like a hawk) because she was still hungry after feedings. It worked very well. Now she has a couple of tablespoons of rice cereal with her baby food and formula, but I only feed her once or twice per day 5 or 6 days per week. She gets mostly breastmilk and is 8 months old. No lie! (*smile*)
My pediatrician says that the most important thing is to watch the baby's diaper content and bowel movements and as long as everything looks good then proceed with confidence.

At 28 weeks. (6.5 months) and I didn't ever give her rice cereal. Her first food was a banana. A whole one. She held it, and ate it. We have been doing baby led weaning, and even now at nearly eight months she's still only eating once a day, and has never eaten from a spoon. The mantra is Up Till One It's Just For Fun! Meaning that babies don't actually need anything other than breastmilk (or formula) for the first year of their lives. My baby eats everything I eat now - without help from me - she is on the 50th line for everything and has never had to see a doctor for anything.
Babies are not ready for any solids until they reach certain developmental milestones - sitting up independently, teething, and showing an interest in food. Rice cereal and most other 'first stage' foods are artificially liquidised in order for the baby to be able to eat them. Nature is a wonderful thing - if the baby isn't able to eat a food, maybe there's a reason behind it - and maybe it's not advisable to mash or puree that food into an artificial semi solid form in order to allow your baby to eat it. They are just my thoughts, please noone be offended.
Rice cereal does not help development. It does not contain any viable nutritional benefits for babies. It's essentially junk food for babies. I would personally avoid it.
Hang in there, ride out the growth spurts in which babies want to eat a lot more for a few days or even a couple of weeks. Increased appetite doesn't mean weaning readiness. Make it to six months if at all possible. You'll be fine. Good luck!

I put a little cereal in the bottle at around 6 weeks, one bottle a day, the night bottle. I spoon fed her vegetables as soon as she hit 12 weeks. She took to it right away and had no digestive problems. She was way to hungry and active to be sustained only by milk/formula. It's not the textbook response that people want to hear these days but this is what my child needed and she's now almost 2 and healthy in every way.

I started a small amount of rice cereal at around 2 months old. I know that there are guidelines, but I think it all depends on the baby is ready for.

Baby #1 - four months because he was grabbing food off our plates and trying to stuff it into his mouth, which the dr. said meant he must be ready.
Baby #2 - nine months. We tried at 6, but she wasn't interested. Tried at 7, still not interested. Same at 8 months.
Baby #3 - almost six months, because she was also grabbing for food.

I started last week, he was 17 weeks. He had diarrhea so the doctor told me too. He loves it and is now trying something new every few days. The doctor said that some babies are ready sooner than others, my son I guess was ready. Its fun to watch them learn something new and also get a different taste...finally!

I started at 4 months because we were having problems with my milk supply and just trying to get more calories in her. I really wanted to wait till 6 months! The recommendation is 4-6months.
