Well, the definition emulator is to emulate (act like) another.
So lets say PS2 console it is a console an original. To have an emulator you must have another device that has hard ware and software that can convert the originals codeing and game play into an usable source.
Consoles are what the original game was written for. It preforms best on that platform. If you have an emulator on your computer you are using a lot of resources to preform what the console did effortlessly.
Lets say you have a windows based computer here is whats happing. Your computer has windows and all related applications running, you are then adding an emulator program, then you are adding a game program to be ran in the emulator which windows has to convert into something that you can see on a monitor and hear out of speekers, plus interact with using a keyboard, mouse , steering wheel, joystick, gamepad, ect.. alot of resources your computer has to do dubble duty.
Consoles seem to be here for a long term, tho their shapes and functions may change they will be around for many more years.
If I had my choice of console or emulator: I'd choose Emulator I like that you can have more controle of the games by using a frount end program like GameEx to manage my emulator, game list, give me screen shots, and cheat codes.
