Amen!! You are hitting on a huge pet peeve of mine. Schools are there to teach many things. But parents need to realize that this does not relieve them from instilling the core values that make their child who he or she is. Socialization and etiquette and responsibility are stressed at school. But unless the child has a frame of reference at home, the connection between what is practiced at school and what is taught at home is not made.
Here..... read this.... it kind of talks about my opinions about the role parents should take in their child's education. Let me know what you think. (and please excuse the typos. I seriously had no idea that anyone would have read it or I would have proofed it!)

I agree with you. Manners are best learned at home. However, the children are not getting that education, so we better give some guidance at school. Just like safe Internet usage it needs to be taught and reinforced in the school systems because the parents are not getting the information across to the children.

Ideally, it should be taught at home and reinforced at school by making it required for students to adhere to it. Starting with "please" and "thank you" for the very youngest, and building on that foundation until nice manners and proper social behavior are second-nature to every child. However, most parents of school-age children were, themselves, never taught proper manners and etiquette. So it's no wonder their children are rude and obnoxious ... and get away with it! So, yes. I would love to see such classes not just offered, but REQUIRED in schools. What a great idea! And how much better for the school atmosphere, if kids were taught to respect each other, their teachers, and the social niceties that make dealing with others pleasant rather than confrontational.

Parents should teach the children the proper manners. Only time teachers should teach proper manners, is when it is needed.

Absolutely correct. Manners begin at home, and should be taught at home. Being a surrogate parent is NOT the teacher's job. However, I think teacher DOES have a responsibility to reinforce the rules at school, and report ill manners back to parents as part of the teacher/parent conference roll. Hell, back in my days, we used to call it "citizenship" (do you work and play well with others), and it was graded as much as anything else.

Well, in an "ideal" world, it is the parent's job. However, until there is an i.q. or other test that would prohibit idiots from breeding, someone's got to teach these kids manners!
I know that's sad, but I was a teacher for eleven years and "it takes a village."
Notice I said I WAS a teacher- not enough money in the world.

I think manners should be though at home as well as schools
must of the kids today have no respect what-so-ever of their elders and treat people like garbage. When I was in grade school in my country teachers and other people were to be respected if not then I would get in big trouble. My kids are being raise this way, because I don't want them to grow up to be spoil, impolite and disrespectful brats.

Teachers shouldn't have to teach children proper manners, but they should correct children when they're not being polite.
Teaching children proper manners is their parents' job.

Manners should grow a foundation at home, but should be built upon everywhere. Schools are a place to mold our children intellectually as well as socially! I see school as a wonderful place to build upon the manners children are gaining, but not a sole means of distribution!
