I live in Nevada.. that is commonly used to describe having alot, or being full of something... "i am hella ticked"
I went to New York for a couple months, and I said "hella" about something... oh man! It's absolutely associated with California, and not only that but NYer's think it's a very very "ghetto" thing to say!
haha I stopped saying it... btw.

Hella as in 'hell of a...'? then no, its not a California only thing. It spread to pretty much whoever speaks English and is under 30-35.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=HELLA
Term used to indicate personal superiority. When spoken in conversation, the receiving party immediatley knows that the person saying the word is of a high class because of that person's NorCal roots.
Thusly, if the receiver is not of the same geography and stature, negative emotions arise from envy. A primary example is that of the frustrated SoCal dweller who is frequently subjected to the mighty and humbling presence of NorCalers.
Alternatively, Hella can alert other prestigious NorCalers that they are dealing with a higher species much like themselves.

I think it started as a San Fran thing, but ever since No Doubt did that 'Feeling Hella Good' song I think most people would know what it means regardless of where they live.

I'm from arizona and i use it every once and a while. When i use it, it is almost a way of saying really or very.
For example:
That jump was hella sick.

i live in NJ, and my friend used that word.
i'll tell you the context that he used it in.
i have a picture on myspace of him, me, and my other friend.
my other friend wrote "cute pic"
and he wrote right underneath: "you mean me? or you mean her? i KNOW you aren't talking about the picture as a whole cause you're hella ugly!"
so i guess it means like "really" but used in a negative connotation and just emphasizes the negative word which follows it...
