Can anyone give me any advise on embarking on IVF. TTC for a year without success so went for tests at Fertility Clinic. My husband has a good sperm count but low motility following a vacectomy reversal last year. I have a slightly high FSH which may be causing me to produce poor quality eggs. We have had our consultation at the clinic and they have told us we can start treatment at the end of the month. The treatment will be IVF with ICSI and I will have an increase dose of drugs for my high FSH. (I dont think it is mega high but borderline). Has anyone gone through this and what are our chances of success. We have already made a decision that if it doesnt work first time around, we will have one more attempt with the frozen eggs taken the first time. We only have to pay a nominal amount for this attempt as all the work and consultation would have been done the first time. Any help and advise would be appreciated. x

I haven't gone through it yet but I have been diagnosed with high FSH like yourself and my DP has low morphology and motility and so for us ICSI is the only option. IUI would not work for us because of his low fertility so I am guessing you and your husband would be similar.

The success rates do vary from clinic to clinic, so you will need to talk to your chosen clinic about their particular success. Also some state pregnancies as success other states live birth as a success, a big difference so worth checking! On average the success rates are around the 30% mark. This could be lower in your case because of your FSH, the drugs they give you may not stimulate your ovaries as well as they would do normally. You don't mention your age, but again this needs to be factored into the success rate, as you need to be able to sustain the pregnancy. It's all a bit of a lottery I'm afraid and not one I am enjoying, but I really do wish you all the luck in the world and hope you conceive the baby you've always wished for. xxx

(Oh and I just have to say, please ignore the first poster who is clearly is so insensitive to this subject when already having children of their own. Unbelievable!)

Only advice I can give you hunny is be strong I have been through ivf well icsi and it is stressful , sometimes painful and the hope you carry is unbelievable , do you work? I only ask because with the nasal spray it sent me flying and I was no good to anyone once I had my dose , maybe would be worth covering that aspect aswell ok. Unfortunately it didn't work for us and we couldn't afford to go again , it was going to be the same price, I really hope it works for you feel free to im me if i'm not online i will see when i next am good luck xx

Tiggyman that is such a terrible response , I am all for adoption /fostering but at the same time everyone is entitled to have the chance of creating their very own bundle to grow inside them and feel all the love thats possible for this tiny little person, just because people don't go through adoption route straight away doesn't mean they don't care about the children who were born and either couldn't be cared for or were just not wanted. As for using bleedin angelina and brad as examples why have they adopted foreign children when so many american kids are without loving homes.

I have two children from two IVF rounds, so I am fully in support of this procedure. IUI has about a 10% per cycle success rate, so IVF will offer you a much higher rate. You should check the success rates of your clinic against others before proceeding, however, as rates vary greatly from clinic to clinic; the CDC tracks these at this web site: http://www.cdc.gov/ART/

I would also suggest seeking support while going through the IVF process, as it can be really challenging. You can get on-line support at a variety of websites, such as http://www.ivfconnections.com/ http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ and http://www.resolve.org/ You can also check the Resolve web site for support resources in your area, such as groups that you can attend to connect with other women in a similar situation.

My doctor gives a 30% chance of success but I have heard other doctors give a 50% chance of success.

Please do not listen to the people who say that IVF is like playing God. If God did not want people to conceive through IVF then He would not have created doctors smart enough to figure out how to do it.

It's not a big suprise that people who are against IVF already have biological children of their own....also no big suprise that these same people are always pushing adoption on other people.

What? You are good enough to have your own biological children but other people shouldn't be given the opportunity?

IVF seems like a rather extreme move at this point. Have you tried IUI yet? I would try IUI with the treatment for FSH before going through the expensive and invasive IVF that will put so many of your embryos in jeapordy.

IVF is really rather like playing God. You freeze human embryos and then use only what you want, discarding the rest like day old fish.

The are millions of kids out there looking for a loving home. Contrary to popular opinion, Angelina and Brad did NOT adopt all of them. Open your hearts and stop trying to facilitate something that nature clearly doesn't mean to have happen.

I was fortunate enough to have biological children; but we have a relative who was unable to have kids. She and her husband adopted a girl and a boy; the girl just received her MBA; the boy will get his PHD in two years' time. We never even think about whether or not there is any "blood" relation there. My daughter and her 32-year old female cousin are so alike sometimes it's scary.

So quit trying to fool Mother Nature and go the adoption route. Good luck and God bless.
