step 1 - determine what you want. if you're wanting to build a computer, by now you should know which processor, graphics card, how much hard drive space, etc. you want. pay attention to which things are compatible with what; your motherboard determines which kind of processor, memory, etc. you can get.
step 2 - once you selected your components, add up the prices. take about 20% of that number - this is how much you'll need for miscellaneous junk you forget to buy, to return stuff for warranty repairs, or flat out replace dead componets, buy tools, whatever - call it the cost of learning. if you can afford the cost of the components, plus this premium for mess-ups, notice that you can buy a pre-made computer guaranteed to work for this price, with a warranty and support on the whole darn thing.
step 3 - order the components (or buy them from the local stores if you don't mind paying the premium) and put it all together. it's as simple as legos, and the more complicated steps are described in manuals.
step 4 - boot up the thing, hope it works, install the operating system and any other desired software you purchased in step 3, and you're good to go!

There are several necessary components that are needed for a do it yourself computer:
1) Case - To house all of your compnents
2) Power supply - Sometimes comes with the case
3) Mother board - Central board that connnects everything together
4) CPU - The brain of a computer; sometimes you need a cpu fan too
5) RAM - Nowadays the limiting factor on how fast your computer will run
6) Graphics Card - For all your games
7) Hard drive - At least one to store the Operating System
6) Peripheral Drives (i.e. CD-ROM DVD drive, disk drives etc...)

After you gather all of this together all you need is to connect each part together. This depends on your setup sometimes, but is mostly straight forawrd. All the components will hook up to the mother board in some way or another. Then you're done and all you need is a monitor keyboard and mouse.
