On our 2005 Malibu there is a button on the driver's side of the gear shift. It has a + and - sign. There's no mention of it in the manual which came with the car. When it's pushed there doesn't seem to be any reaction and no symbol appears on the dash panel. We'd like to know what it does if anyone can help.

This is for the "sport-matic" transmission, or whatever Chevy calls them in their vehicles. Think of it like this. When you put the transmission in drive, the car shifts gears automatically - thus the automatic transmission. If you shift down to where the + and - are, you are able to shift the gears yourself. Think of it as if you were driving a manual transmission (aka - stick shift), but there is no clutch. You control when the gears change.

There is no real benefit to this mode though, unless you are driving on ice, and want to shift early to reduce torque to the wheels, or if you want to hot rod the car by leaving the transmission in a lower gear for a longer time (run it to redline before shifting). It is fun to play with from time to time though, but for daily driving, I'd let the transmission shift for itself. Hope that helps.

It allows you to manually shift gears. Its an automatic transmission with manual shift-gate. Its pretty much worthless. It won't let you redline the transmission control module will still shift the transmission when it hits red-line. You can manually place the gear into 2nd but the transmission will still start in 1st gear. So even in snow and ice its really pointless.

Is you car automatic?

Mine is and the + and - is either side and I push the gear lever sideways to change up and down the gearbox manually when I want a bit more response

May be that's what yours is.

ah ha...Good thing I'm a car salesman for GM>>>
If you put your gear selector all the way down to the "m" or low gear, the plus and minus allow you to shift manually when you drive, start off and then push the plus, and again, and again, to shift up, push minus to down shift...its fun. kinda like an automatic stick shift.!!! Good luck

It sounds like the Overdrive button. It could be the next gear switch as well as with going to a higher or lower gear. You might be best to ask the dealership. Good Luck and GOD Bless
