No, not really. It did snow once here in the South Bay, though it was back in 1975-76--sometime then. My daughter has a friend who lives in SJ near Milpitas and her dad said they recently got a bit of snow. Now remember, it's usually more like ice than true snow (but in the 70's it was really snow), and it's usually only like an inch or so.

YES it does! - It snowed last winter and accumulated on the ground. My friend that works at San Jose State University emailed me pictures. I live in south San Jose and have seen snow numerous times in the last 11 years. While the accumulation usually lasts only a few hours to a 1/2 a day here in the Almaden Valley, it does happen. Every year there is snow down to about 1000 feet, which means Mt Hamilton, with the Lick Observatory, and the Santa Cruz Mts. Get hit. They will sometimes have to close roads for part of the day since we really are not equipped with much in the way of snow removal equipment. I must mention that it does not happen often or every year, however.

I have relatives in San Francisco and used to in Santa Clara (right by San Jose). I don't know of it ever snowing in winter there. If some odd wind ever does bring in snow it would probably melt very quickly. I think they do sometimes get snow on Mt. Hamilton near San Jose. The coastal mountains generally don't get enough snow for winter sports. People in the Bay Area wanting to ski head inland past the Sacramento Valley and up into the Sierra Nevada Range. It's approximately 200 miles from San Jose to the ski slopes.

I grew up in Santa Clara and I have a picture of my neighbor and we each were holding a snow ball and snow still on the ground! That was 1962 and I will never forget the next time was 1975 or 76 as my son was in kindergarten home from school with chickenpox and cried because he couldn't go outside to play. That was in Almaden in San Jose--just don't remember if it was at end of the 75 or beginning of 76.

In the years that I lived there, no, it didn't- though one of the other writers is correct that it does snow in the mountains in the winter. San Jose is located in a valley between 2 sets of mountains- the Santa Cruz ( Holy Cross in English) mountains to west, and the lower end of the Sierra chain to the east. Both of these ranges routinely get light dustings of snow in the winter, usually in January and sometimes February. But San Jose itself only rarely if ever actually sees snow. Sometimes I would look out my window and see some snow on the top of Mt. Umunuhm in the winter ( this is the tallest mountain in the Santa Cruz range, with a height of over 4,400 feet at the summit) but this was rather rare. It definitely snows on Mount Hamilton, which is located to the east and north of San Jose. That mountain has an observatory at its summit- it's the white domed object that one can see from the air when flying into the SJ airport in the daylight hours. Hope this answers your question.

Well, on the valley floor, it's been known to snow maybe once every 10 years. Usually it melts the instant it hits the ground. Once around 1976, there was actually enough to coat the ground for a few hours.
We do have some mountain tops nearby that do get snow several times a year, but access is really limited.

It snowed in San Jose in 1976. I have a picture of myself standing in the snow. It was not ice - it was snow. Those who say differently must not be old enough to remember. It has snowed since then, but nothing that really sticks to the ground.

The mountains will usually get a light dusting of snow every year, lasts about a week. But in the valley floor, in San Jose proper, no. Every four or five years we'll get one really cold day and there might actually be tiny snowflakes in the air for about an hour - I've never seen one actually land on the ground though. But that's as close as we get to actual snow.

NO, there is no snow in the Bay Area, during the night in the winter, you will find your windshield on your car with ice, that's from the cold weather. Not snow. Santa Cruz has snow. You can go up there, it's only 30 mins away from San Jose.
