Transfer a bulk of your paycheck to a savings account - out of sight, out of mind. Then when you look at your balance in your checking account, you will think you have less money to spend.

Spending can be emotional. What void are you trying to fill when you buy something? If you can figure out what makes you tick emotionally, you can curb your spending. Make yourself wait to buy something, at least a week, if you still 'just gotta have it' a week later, fine. But you may find the need to have it goes away when you make yourself wait.

Good luck.

I used to spend a lot of money too. Lately, there's been a couple techniques I've been trying to not spend as much (and amazingly, they're working!)

(1) I ask myself how much use I would get out of the item. (I used to find myself being things that were "cool" or "pretty", that would either sit on a shelf or hang in my closet never to be worn again.)

(2) I make myself wait at least 2-3 days to decide if I really do want it. Usually by then, the urge to buy it has passed.

Yes just step back and say do I really want this, or will it be one of those things in a week or two that just sit in my room? Then ask yourself do I really need this? Am I better of with it or without it. Take a logical approach. and do not impulse buy.
