Just curious - does all baby formula have that strong "wheaty" smell?

My 6 month old has been exclusively breastfed but his doctor gave me some Similac Alimentum because she thinks he may be allergic to something I'm eating.

It smells so strong and unpleasant (to me at least). Do all formulas smell this way or is this just because this is a hypoallergenic formula?

just curious...

Alimentum is STINKY, all formulas stink but Alimentum is baaaaad. My daughter is just now coming off of Alimentum at 10 months old. It worked wonders for her and I can't tell you how grateful we were to find her allergy b/c once we switched her to the hypoallergenic it made her a MUCH happier baby and us much happier parents! She slowly outgrown her allergy and the dr. thinks she might be able to tolerate milk by 18 months old.

The pretty much all have a bad smell.

I always thought that the milk based ones didn't smell as strong as the soy based ones. And in our case, all 4 of our children would get bound up (not being able to poop) when the drank the soy formula. So much for hypoallergenic formula.

And the poop stinks equally well. As opposed to breastfed babies which don't seem to have any smelly poop (until they start eating solid foods).

The hypo formulas and the soy formulas smell the worst. However, regular formula doesn't smell much better. I would go with the bland diet and start adding food gradually and you will probably find out what is bothering your baby. I had to that with baby #4. I had to cut out peanuts, strawberries, spicy foods, chocolate, corn, and a bunch more stuff. Then add back foods slowly, come to find out, it was the peppers I was eating that was bothering her. Good Luck

I always thought formula smelled "funny" but it was fine.

If you have any issues/concerns, buy another package and see if it smells the same. If they are different, I would suggest calling the manufacturer and letting them know so they can look into it. As long as its before the expiration date and was properly sealed when you opened it up, it is more than likely OK.

yes, some formula more than others as long as the date on the can is good, it should be okay. You should smell soy though, yuck I gagged when I fed my son that.

I have no idea why we would want babies to eat something that makes us gag. Seriously. If it's so gross that you almost vomit at the smell of it, why on earth would you feed it to your most treasured and loved child?

If you're saying what I think you're saying, it's normal, have heard that from a lot of women.
