In the wild, they look a lot like trout and they are carps. The Chinese and Japanese saw they were able to be tamed, so started keeping them as pets. They messed with their genes and created koi, shubunkins, fan tails and lion heads for our entertainment and amusement. In an outdoor pond, you can sometimes get "wild" goldfish types when the goldfish breed. They will be a dull brown color, but are very hardy souls.

There is no such thing as wild goldfish. It is believe the ancestor of our goldfish now are carp like fishes. And they have been selectively bred for their body shape mutation and colour mutation since 2000 years ago, result is what we get to see now. Honestly the goldfish we have today probably wouldn't last long when release back to the wild due to it's slow swimming form, it would be food for birds and other predator in the wild.

From http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/pets/goldfish.shtml

History
Goldfish originated from a species of fish called the Crucian carp. No one knows for certain when they were domesticated, but ancient Chinese art and literature suggests they have been kept in Chinese homes since 800 AD. Goldfish became widespread in many other countries in the Far East after 1650. At this time, Europeans were trading with the East and brought goldfish back to Europe with them. At first, goldfish were kept in outside ponds and were not housed indoors until the late 1800s.

Life span
The average lifespan of a goldfish is 5-10 years.

Distribution and Habitat in the wild
Goldfish (Carassius auratus) range from Eastern Europe across to China and inhabit well-vegetated pools and lakes.

Behaviour in the wild
Goldfish breed in the summer and many males chase one female in desperation to fertilise her. They spawn (distribute the fertilised eggs) over aquatic vegetation, and the eggs hatch after about a week. Goldfish feed on crustaceans, insect larvae, molluscs and some vegetation.

The goldfish you see in stores (other than the brown "goldfish" in the feeder tanks) look nothing like the wild ancestors. The goldfish sold as pets are the result of hundreds of years of careful breeding so technically, you wouldn't find them in the wild anywhere!

As far as the wild ancestors of goldfish, they are from the orient.

I believe from the carp family. They have been bred sothat they have the gold colour. In the wild they are a muddy shade.
