im gonna build a new comuter soon and im wondering if i should get an intel x6800, a Q66000 or wait for the 45nm Penryn intel cpu's to come out later this year. I know on july 22nd the x6800 will be half the price it is right now and same for q6600. Whats the difference between q6600 and x6800, and if its just clockspeed, cant i just overclock thee q6600?
And also whats so new about the penryn besides the die shrink and will the performance boost be real dramatic?
And also what about amd's barcelona processors coming out, what do u think about those?
The restriction is that i dont want to pay more than $500 for the processor though. Im going to use it for 3d rendering and pc gaming.
Thanx for the help.

The X6800 is not going down in price, the Extreme versions never go down in price. The Q6600 will be dropping to about $270. The X6800 is only dual core, while the Q6600 is quad core. As for the Penyrn, they will not only be a die shrunk, but they will do more instructions per cycle, which means even more performance at the same Ghz speed. Plus they will have higher speed Ghz than current Core 2s, making them faster still.

As for AMD, the Barcelonas are for servers, not really your area, but I know what you are talking about. The codename for the desktop ones is Agena, the brand names will be AMD Phenom X4 for the quad cores. It is just too soon to tell how they will perform against the Intels, not any reliable benchmark numbers out yet.

If you plan to do 3D rendering, do get a quad core no matter which brand you choose, it will definately be useful in that area.

umm no the x6800 isn't going down in price at all only the q6600 just save your self some time and buy a E6850 when they come out july 22 its a amazing dual core processor and it should last you till intel's real quad cores come out after penryn because neither those quad cores you listed or penryn are going to be real there like the pentium D's which at the time they were cool but when games recommend dual cores pentium D's suttered same things going to happen with intel's current fake quad cores so just get a a core 2 duo there perfect for gaming todays games most games don't even ultilize dual cores
