I am currently in a musical and the director isn't happy with anything I'm doing. I kind of feel like giving up. What do I do now?

The Unhappy Director is often just a tool to try and squeeze just a little more out of the performers.
Know that it is NOT personal; just because you don't like my blue shirt does not mean you don't like me.

I know that if you give up and quit -- you'll be quitting for a very long time. Walking off of a show is walking away from the entire thing. Break a trust in the Theater and it's broken for a very long time.

Stick with it -- you probably perform in just a few weeks and it'll be over soon. Survive this and you'll have yet another "war story" to tell in the Green Room during the next show!

Is the director literally not happy with anything you're doing? I would ask the director to stay after rehearsal with you or meet you an hour sooner to work with you on these things. If he/she won't do that, perhaps you can ask the assistant director or a trusted, skilled friend to take specific notes and help you work on what the director wants you to change. Remember that it takes all sorts to direct and though some are very kind, helpful and giving individuals, some are going to be unhappy no matter what and all you can do is try to make the adjustments they ask you to make, try your best not to take it personally, and just pretend to be playdough... let them mold you into what they want you to be. Your job is to bring the director's vision to life so go with it.

Best of luck to you, I know it's a tough situation. Try not to let it get you down. Find the small joys in each rehearsal & performance! If nothing else, start planning the wrap party!

How about asking your director what it is that he doesn't like about your performance. But, be ready for his constructive criticisms as you will most likely be sensitive to his feedback. By asking him, this shows him that you are willing to grow and make necessary changes to make progress. And don't give up, just keep pressing on.

Don't give up! My best advice is to talk to the director and ask what you could do to change whatever it is you're doing.

Work really really super hard and show the director that you CAN do it. And this sounds cheesy but- listen to your heart!
