As $34.36 is 100%, adding 2% to it makes 102%.

102% of $34.36
= (102/100) * 34.36
= $35.05 (to the nearest cent)

adding two percent to something is the same as adding .02 to something.

Adding .02 to something is the same as multiplying it by 1.02.

So you'd do 34.36 * 1.02

(34.36)(1 + 2%)
(34.36)(1 + 0.2) = 35.0472

It's used to find tax or what not. Usually you do (1 + %) because you don't want to make things harder by doing (34.36)(0.2) then add that on to 34.36
