I think the urgency you mentioned is itself one of the reasons. People feel angry, frightened, outraged and desperate. This leads to emotional outbursts. I try to feel encouraged that at least people are engaged in the urgent issues instead of focusing on video games and the latest doings of Paris Hilton. And of course this format encourages, short, quick answers. I imagine that given more time, most of these people would have some intelligent thoughts to share. Maybe the venting is just a sort of mental throat-clearing before the more cogent ideas come out.

This is politics and tensions are running higher than ever these days. Both sides are easily angered because we both feel like so much is at stake. A nation that could have been united after a national tragedy...actually, two national tragedies (9/11 and Katrina)..is now more divided than ever. Partisan politics are to blame. If both Democrats and Republicans put aside their differences, stopped working for lobbyists and corporations and special interest groups and STARTED working for the American People like they're supposed to be, we'd all be better off than we are now. As far as name calling goes, I'd say the majority of us stand firmly by our beliefs, for better or worse. Republicans tend to think nothing's going on while they're politicians are in the majority and Democrats tend to think nothing's going on when our politicians are in the majority. But when the opposite party is in the majority from where our loyalties lay, then we're rabid dogs and we're sure they're up to no good. They're ALL up to no good! We need to get the money from lobbyists and special interest groups OUT of Politics. NOW! By ENDING Corporate Welfare! And Both sides, Democrats and Republicans need to keep a watchful eye on our own parties and the opposing party as well. At the risk of sounding repititious, the Most AMERICAN thing we as citizens of the Unites States can do is to Hold Our Elected Officials ACCOUNTABLE! ASK Questions, DEMAND Answers.

Most of the name calling has to do with the fact that a majority of users on here are indeed juveniles, and therefore uneducated.

I would say name calling is like swearing. It's the inability of a feeble mind to express itself forcefully.
A good example is the answer following mine. I can see you put some time and thought into your question. In it I cannot tell if you are liberal or conservative. You left the politics out of it. Yet, here comes a boob and qualifies himself as unable to converse in the arena of ideas. People like this are koolaid drinkers. They are being led by politicians like sheep to the slaughter.

There are no "Real Adult" questions on YA, see the cute attempts at photo-shop logo's and the same Blame Bush/Evil Bush day in and day out question.
Also it would be safe to say that 90% of the posters are school age and never voted or this will be ther first.

Since many people on YA have no idea what the real issues are...they resort to name calling.
What else could they do if they don't have a clue?...They resort to childish name calling because they have nothing intelligent to say!

People resort to name calling, i.e. racist, race bater, sexist etc because they have not the vocabulary, or ability to respond in a reasonable or logical manner.
If you tell the truth and that truth goes against what some people soooo wnt to believe then you will make them uncomfortable. Unable to respond without sounding the fool they resort to name calling.

It is so much easier to name-call than to come up with a cogent argument one way or the other. And good arguments do demand good spelling and grammar, too.
What do you expect from juveniles?

Lack of intelligence/support for a debate. Sometimes there are people that are outright a**holes, like that $mitty character who proclaims to be on his 187th account the last time I saw.

I agree with you, but certain people (perhaps those who favor the war in Iraq against one who doesn't) do it because it makes them feel superior. Bloody childish, I must say.
