To solve this kind of equations, you need to learn how to add fractions. The trick to add equations is that you need that the numbers below the fractions to be the same.

Let's see this example:

x - 1/3 = -3/4 ==> x = 1/3 - 3/4

Now you have to add 1/3 with -3/4. The easier way to do it is by multiplying the numbers below the fraction, in this case multiply 3 by 4.

By doing this, naturally you get 12. So below the fractions now you put 12: 1/3 will convert to 1/12, and -3/4 will convert into -3/12, so now you will have:

x = 1/12 - 3 /12

What you have remember, is that once you change a number under a fraction, you have to change also the number on top of the fraction. How you will do this? By multiplying the number you have on the top by the number you multiplied on the bottom to get 12.

For instance, in the first case where you originally had 1/3, you had to multiply 3 by 4 in order to get 1/12. So now, you multiply the number on the top by 4; in this case you will have 1 by 4, you will get 4. So now you have 4/12.

We do the same for the next fraction. In order to -3/4 become -3/12, you had to multiply 4 by 3. So now you multiply the number on the top: -3 by 3 will get you -9. In this case -3/12 will transform into -9/12.

In this way, now both actions have the same number on the bottom, and the numbers on the top have been adapted.

See how your equation has changed:

x = 1/3 - 3/4 ==> 1/12 - 3/12 ==> 4/12 - 9/12

As I was telling you, the rule to add fractions is that the number on the bottom is the same, and only the number on the top changed. In this way:

4/12 - 9/12 is like 4 - 9, giving you -5, so now you have -5/12.

And this is how you get your answer:

x = 1/3 - 3/4 ==> 1/12 - 3/12 ==> 4/12 - 9/12 = -5/12
x = -5/12

If you want to verify it, just put the new value of x in the original equation and check if it fits.

x - 1/3 = -3/4
-5/12 - 1/3 = -3/4 (multiply 12 by 3)
-5/36 - 1/36 = -3/4 (multiply -5 by 3)
-15/36 - 1/36 = -3/4 (multiply -1 by 12)
-15/36 - 12/36 = -3/4 (now add -15 -12)
-27/36 = -3/4 (now divide -27 by 36; or simplify -27/36)
-3/4 = -3/4

Now you know for sure your answer is right!!
Just follow this same sequence with similar problems and you will be fine.
Hope this was helpful.

First, bring the -1/3 to the right side, and when you do this you must change its sign. You'll get:

x= -3/4 + 1/3

Now you must find a common denominator, which is 12 in this case.
So -3/4 = -9/12 and 1/3 = 4/12 - here I'm just expressing the fractions both with the same denominator of 12.

Now it's easy: x= -9/12 + 4/12
x=-5/12

add 1/3 to each sdie of the equation, then x = -3/4 + 1/3 or
x = -9/12 + 4/12 = -5/12

First you need to isolate x one side of the equation by adding 1/3 to both sides. Find a common denominator and add the fractions.
