Where is the most popular tourist area in Daytona Beach?

I am trying to plan a trip to Daytona but have no idea where I should stay.

There are the usual chain hotels right on the Interstate. We stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, I believe, which worked out well. It was an easy drive to downtown and the beach itself.

You obviously can get a room closer to the beach, if you are willing to pay for it. There are a ton of places down there.
