Im pretty sure the place I took my BBQ grill propane cylinder to get filled for the first time didnt purge it of air first...

Its only been a few months & the tank has gone empty since that first filling - so Im curious what my next step is -

what does the filling station do to remedy?

thanks for the responses -

when buying an empty propane cylinder (mines a 20lb) the tanks are filled w/ air for atmospheric / transportation / storage purposes.

This air has to be purged out completely (theres a label on empty cylinders that inform the fill station about this)

I just wasnt sure if I had to let the fill station know to do anything in particular upon my 2nd fill...

I don't think there is much that can be done now. I would think that the air in the tank is now gone. Mention it when you get it refilled.

Purge Propane Tank

When they fill the tank with Propane it pushes out the air. There is nothing to purge.
You didn't say what size tank you have. Most people have what is called a 20 pound tank on their BBQ pits. It weights approximately 20 lbs when filled with propane.
If you have a larger tank you shouldn't be transporting it yourself anyway. A 20 lb tank should last a couple of months depending on how much you use it and how hot you like your grill. Also make sure you turn off the gas at the tank after you are done grilling. Some grills don't have really good valves on them & leak some, which waste gas and can be dangerous.

There is a concern cowboy ! ! ! The tank must be purged, the correct procedures can be found in NPGA Safety bulletin 133-89 (a). NPGA Bulletin 139-89 (a) states that all new containers (ASME Tanks - [MH] & DOT Cylinders [Trailer cylinders], including Motor Fuel containers) and in some cases used containers, may contain water, air, or other contaminants, and it is essential that these be removed before filling the container and placing it into service. Water vapor present in the gas vapor may cause regulator freeze ups at the inlet.

Air by definition contains moisture. The real risks that result from not purging, or improperly purging, the tank or cylinder for the first time, need to be known by the newbie

Not sure what the concern is, the tank is being purged as it is filling. It would not fill otherwise. How long do you expect it to last? Also, you can tell by the weight how much propane was put into the tank. I think your next step is to refill the tank and cook some burgers.
