I'm wanting to upgrade my Compaq Presario C509 notebook memory which is currently 512MB. I was browsing through best buy and came upon a PNY 1GB memory on sale for $44.99 at Best Buy. Should I or should I not? I've never dealt with memory upgrades so I don't really know what to look for as for brands. Whats your opinion?

It's not a real bad price. However....

Since you don't know much about RAM you need to know whether your PC will handle and recognize a 1G stick!!!

Try going to both of these two sites and run their analysis tools on your laptop to see how much and what kind of RAM you have and what your PC will support. Lots of older PC simply won't recognize a 1G stick so be careful of what you buy.

Once you know what kind of RAM and how much RAM each slot will accommodate then you can go forward with a possible upgrade.

Hope this helps.

I personally would not buy any upgrades from Best Buy. When it comes to computers, I don't trust those folks to know what they're talking about! However, $45 for a gig stick is a steal of a deal, so it might be worth making an exception ... here's what I'd do:

1) Go to Best Buy and write down all the technical specifications of the RAM they have on sale. (It looks like you've already done this)

2) Go back home and go to an online RAM seller with a system scanner (such as Crucial.com).

3) Run the scan, and note the specifications of the sticks the online seller says will work on the computer. In addition to recommending RAM sticks, the site should also have some general guidelines about what RAM will work on your computer, what specifications you need to be most concerned about, etc.

If the one that Best Buy has for sale is a match for your computer, go for it. Hang onto the receipt so you can take it back just in case it turns out not to work on your laptop.

But again, my opinion: If the online seller can match Best Buy's price, or come reasonably close, I'd buy RAM online rather than from Best Buy. However, that is my thoroughly biased opinion, and, as always, your mileage may vary. If you've had better luck with your local Best Buy and you think you can trust them, go for it.

In any case, best of luck to you and enjoy the upgrade -- with the added RAM, your lappy should run like a dream. :-)

Okay, I bought one. My system did not like it and I had problems. Program "Memtest" found 14856 errors on the stick. My system: AMD 3700, 1 GB Ram, (still) WinXP pro, Gigabyte MB (not real fussy about memory) Anyway, my recommendation, don't buy it. Use Corasir/Crucial website analyzer to see what will work in you PC. Just a thought.
