I never said the US was evil, this question is about economics. And I think Bono is a class 1 hypocrite for moving accounts to another country to avoid paying tax on something he was exempt from for two decades to help promote the arts.

The figure is rising so rapidly that one can not NAIL the figure down -- but it is well over the 8 Trillion dollar mark at this point
And, it is owed, basically, to the World Bank -- most of THAT entity being owned by some eight of the world's richest individuals !!
It is interesting to note that debt is the easiest methods of enslaving people -- people that are in debt, are, for the lack of any better explanation or description --- indentured to the debt holder !!
This is a major reason why the people in power have absolutely no compunction in letting the debt soar to unbelievable heights -- it is the way that they serve THEIR masters -- selling off the population's grandchildren into monetary enslavement for generations !!!
It is absolutely stunning to see just how many people believe that we somehow (?) owe this money to ourselves !! And, yet others that believe wholeheartedly that all the country has to do to solve monetary problems is simply print more paper money !! The public at large is EXTREMELY ignorant of financial matters and THAT is exactly how the people in charge WANT it !!!!!!

The US owes that money to national lenders and banks, not to other countries.
The national debt is not a good thing, but it is not nessesarily a bad thing either. Let me explain:
If I purchase a mortgage on a house for $80,000, and I put up $20,000, then the value of my house is $100,000. By agreeing to do this, I have agreed to go in debt to a lender for $80,000. But I now own a house worth $100,000.
All debt means is that you have something that you haven't paid for yet. It is not always a bad deal.
When it comes to other countries, the US gives more money in foreign aid than anyone else.

Trillions to almost everyone holding our government bonds - the bonds which are paying for the War in Iraq - I think the Chinese may hold more than anyone.
(They could hold gold, instead, but that would drive it's price up through the roof and likewise downwardly when trying to sell it - bonds earn interest and can be sold without losing their value much more efficiently.)

Will you be asking a question next week why the evil U.S. has not forgiven the latest batch of multi billion dollar loans to African countries run by brutal dictators? I realize the question would be dependent on some soulless, valueless celebrity like Bono lecturing you to do so but I guess it could happen.

More than anything else, the US is in debt with the world morally and should raise its non-military aid to the third world to 0.7 percent of its GNP yearly.

Well, the real question is, besides money, how much does the rest of the world owe the US?
