Social Anxiety Disorder?? ADD?? Lots of other new ones too. They seem to be things we used to call "Things you experience when growing up." Now everything is an illness.

Social Anxiety Disorder is an illness like depression, which I bother suffer from. Having panic attacks for most of my life and wanting to kill myself. To answer your question, I think it is our society that is creating this problems today. We are not able to cope with so much pressure. 15 million people suffer from social anxiety disorder, how many more from depression? There is obviously something wrong with our current society and how we are expected to live our lives. We are expected to be perfect at everything or as close to it as possible. That is not possible.

I can see you have never suddenly began to feel like you can't breath and your heart is pounding-that is an example of an anxiety disorder. My step son, went from failing everything to A's and B's with ritalin for ADHD. I have a chemical disorder that requires medication or I have anxiety , depression, and mood swings. Now, having said these things, I agree that something is up. And in my clinical opinion it is the environment (I also had breast cancer with no family history of). I doubt cavemen had migraines and anxiety attacks, but they should have, hiding from dinosaurs must have been terrifying. This is the issue. Fear. All the things we have been behaviorally transformed to fear. Thunderstorms. Rape. Going to college, and work. Tornado's, floods, I think you get my point. I grew up with none of the issues of today, how old are you anyway??

If it's something that goes away after you grow up, then it's not an illness.

But you're right, there are a lot more cases of SAD/ADD and other emotional disorders than there were in the past. The reason is simple: in the past, if a person had a mental illness (a REAL mental illness), then they would either kill themselves before they were old enough to reproduce, or no one would want to marry them. Either way, their condition didn't get passed on. These days, people recieve treatment for their mental illnesses, and they live normal lives, and pass their illnesses on to their children...and their children...and their children...

A temporary problem that one will grow out of doesn't rise to the level of a disorder. The illnesses you mention severely impact the lives of the people who suffer from them. Identifying the problem makes it easier for them to get appropriate help.

A lot of times it is an excuse for acting stupid. I was diagnosed with bipolar and histrionic disorder, and honestly I know that's not what it is, it is just a simple case of rebellion...

When Sigmund Freud presented his findings to his peer group regarding the high prevelance of child sexual abuse, he was forced to recant to save his career.

Today, approximately 25% of u.s. children are sexually abused with fewer than 10% of cases reported to authories.

As as a result, cases of Freud's so-called "hysteria" have been skyrocketing in these kids growing up.

It's just another way to place blame and responsibility outside of ourselves for not doing the hard work of healing our souls and becoming one with the Higher Power.

You are right. People used to live to a standard, and if it was more difficult for them for some reason, they sucked it up.
Now, it's wah-wah and excuses excuses.

People can't help these problems, and yes it is unfortunet. If someone has one of these diorders, it is not like they want to have it. This is a problem, that just can't be controled and we have to deal with it.
