Why is 50's Rock n' Roll now called Rockabilly in the media?
I never heard this term until about 10 yrs. ago.

they're applying it to all 50s rock? What?

when I think of rockabilly, I think of Carl Perkins, early Elvis (the Sun years), Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, and Bill Haley

its a fusion of country and rock 'n' roll

Because many people in the media can't tell the difference between country, hillbilly, and Rock n' Roll music.

Because it has a slighty country influence to it. They combined the terms rock and rool and hillbilly.
