it's called a neutral slam and it's a great way to squeal/smoke the tires when showing off to your friends. the drawback is that you will only get away with it a few times before something breaks and it's usually a major break. the transmission is designed to take the torque produced by the engine, multiply it through a differential and then apply it to the drive wheels IN A SMOOTH TRANSITION.
the neutral slam takes all of the torque and applies it all in a split second and hopefully overloads the friction/traction of the tires. it's a huge shock to ALL parts of the drive-train and it's this "shock load" that causes breakage

gears have teeth and when you "force"gears together at high rpm's your asking for trouble.just doing it once CAN cause, transmission failure, can rip out your drive shaft(if its rear wheel drive) and tear out the yokes on trans. and rear end diff.front wheel drive you can break axles .Try this take a regular box fan with 3 speeds turn it on 1 or low let it run a minute and then JAM a stick or your hand in it it probably will stop with little or no damage to anything ,Now put it on 3 or high and try it.ITS ALL THE SAME.everything is gonna be affected fan, stick, and hand possibly .IT ALL AMOUNTS TO "MONEY".I know from doing it!

It is called a "neutral drop" in an automatic transmission. It is bad because the clutch in automatic transmissions is not meant meant to deal with that kind of stress. The clutch in a manual transmission is designed to handle that kind of abuse a little bit better but those kind of starts will wear out the manual trans clutch faster than just accelerating normally.

Gear mesh, Those gears aren't that tough and once you shear them off...the trans is toast. Going from neutral to drive......OUCH! It's your wallet,
