Everything comes at a cost. This is Lockes "social contract" theory.
Writing this answer costs me time. Sitting through a presentation to get the "free" goodies costs me time I could be using elsewhere, choosing to work far from home costs me time for commuting, it is endless.
You are right, we pay for everything, but in our time and attention, not necessarily in $$

if you put it that way, then nothing is really free. someone mentioned "advice"..but the person giving you the advice is taking up his time and energy to do so. wouldn't using any time or energy = a cost? thus means its not "free" ? but a lot of the time, we don't see the cost..so just don't think too much and make good choices.

Nothing in life is truly free. Even if all you have to give is your time or a little energy. You always have to give something, but that's why the more you give (or put into something), the more get out of it.
