Where are you located? This info is mostly for if you're in the US, some will work for Canucks too :-)
For anyone wishing to get started, you need training. Get into acting classes, get into theatrical productions, student films, indie films, whatever you can do to build your resume and get a reel.
If you want to find a legitimate agent to represent you for commercials, TV & film go to Sag.org. Use the dropdown menu on the right labeled 'resources' and choose 'agent information'. On the next screen, on the left choose 'Find a SAG franchised agent' and follow the directions. You can look up agents all over the US, but there are higher concentrations where the work is (Los Angeles, NY, IL, FL, GA etc.)
Then you can send them your headshot, resume, and a cover letter stating that you are seeking representation and wait to see if they call you in for an interview.
Once you have an agent, they will get you the auditions, but until then you can check out actorsaccess.com. You can also see if your state has a film alliance. Sometimes they post audition information for projects filming locally. For theatre, you can go to backstage.com or http://www.actorsequity.org/castingcall/... If you find the audition on the Equity site, you still may be able to go, as long as their not taking appointments from equity actor's only :-) On backstage.com you have to pay to get all of the info, but the initial search is free and you may be able to see enough info to find out the rest on your own without paying.
Good luck!

It really is better to start with theatre acting. Acting in theatre gives you great experience, and also more knowledge of acting than just jumping into the film industry. Try finding an acting class or a drama class at your school, if you're still in school. Get into theatre acting, find out if acting's really your thing, /then/ try and get yourself an agent who can hook you up with TV/ film auditions. Chances are, you won't be able to nail /any/ role in TV or film if you haven't spent some time on stage. There are hardly any /good/, famous film actors who haven't started out on the stage.

I recommend building a resume, stage presence and contacts by performing with community theaters.
Community theater isn't the movies, but it literally draws from the community at large, and its open to the public. They rarely pay cash.
Most major newspapers have audition notices that are published on the same day of the week. You could find out when they are by calling your local newspaper or visit their website. Harrison Ford got his start in film by being noticed in a Broadway show. I realize that community theater isn't Broadway, but it does build experience, and can lead to other possibilities.
Once you've built a resume, you could go for a talent agent. Most cities with more than 500,000 people have around three. Never pay a talent agent to represent you. If they ask for cash its best to dash.
Finally, many Universities offer degrees in theater,. and several large schools offer nothing but acting courses, such as the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which is where many big names actors have gone to school.

Films are mostly made on the west coast.
Time to move.
Start with local television commercials (Mad Dog Bill's Used Cars!!!) to get your face out there and to learn how to "find your mark" and the basics of camera work.
Acting classes might help but working for the camera is very very different than working on the stage -- so choose your classes wisely.
And know that all "work" is working in the field. Don't wait for anything, start now on whatever you can.

If you wanted to do anything for money what would you do?
You'd go and learn how to do it first wouldn't you? If you wanted to be a mechanic would you just show up at a shop and expect to be hired if you'd never held a wrench? Learn the and have respect for the craft. BTW, you don't just "start out" in commercials. A successful commercial actor makes a very good living and it's a lot harder than it looks.

you could no longer in basic terms brush aside the belief of point appearing. just about each and every television and action picture actor you have ever seen has gotten his or her initiate on point. think of approximately it for a minute. It expenses a extensive quantity of money to make a action picture or a television coach, or possibly a television commercial. It expenses a lot much less to placed on a play, rather an newbie play with actors who've "no appearing skills." somebody who's putting on a point play could have adequate funds to take of venture on a performer with little or no preparation and adventure. yet a action picture or television producer with diverse funds on the line is going to elect to hire in basic terms those with some serious credentials and adventure. in case you haven't any longer any expert skills so far, you could desire to be keen to take a position it sluggish and earnings appearing classes and newbie or backside-rung expert artwork formerly any expert agent will elect to characterize you, and formerly any expert manufacturing will elect to hire you.

You might want to start with acting schools. Usually at acting schools you can get a comp card and get auditions. Your probably not going to automatically get int omovies, so you're going to have to audition for commercials, and then up to television shows. There are websites that give you information for casting calls. And it is good to be in a city where acting is a big industry.
